My first volunteer experience was working as a teacher in a school prison in Tanzania near the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Surrounded by coffee fields, I helped to teach about 50 elementary school students in a two-room building.  Despite the initial culture shock, that first trip had a profound influence on who I am and how I see the rest of the world.  I have subsequently volunteered multiple times in South Africa, Kenya, and Peru, and have become a strong advocate for international volunteerism.
